How To Stop Mosquitoes From Biting You! (7 Ways To Stop Them!)

Mosquitoes can be a massive nuisance, especially when travelling. Wouldn’t it be great if you could dramatically reduce your risk of getting bitten? The good news is I know how to, as I managed to visit Italy for 2 weeks without getting a single bite! Yes, that is correct, no bites for 2 whole weeks! I didn’t just stay indoors all day and night, I ventured out to ‘high risk’ places in the evening and sat out in the open under artificial lights! Still no bites!

Here are my 7 ways to stop mosquitoes from biting you! Enjoy and I hope this helps!:

1. Window sticker for your hotel room: When we travel we always pack a sticker which says ‘Please do not open the window thank you’. We stick this on the handle as the maids who clean the hotel rooms tend to leave the windows open. It may make the room fresher, but it lets in a lot of unnecessary mosquitoes! You can always bring a piece of paper and some tape, just make sure that the sign is written in the native language of the country you’re staying in! Google translate is your friend!

2. Don’t leave your hotel room door open, especially at night!: When you open your hotel room door, even for a split second there are potentially mosquitoes queuing up outside your door! I was amazed to see just how many there were outside our room and in the corridor. If you open your door in the evening and leave the light on you’re bound to end up with some uninvited guests! Beware! If you have to open your door quickly for whatever reason, turn the light off first!

3. Buy insecticide: I’m not a fan of killing insects, but I don’t mind killing mosquitoes that are in my room. You really don’t want to share your bedroom with them. We got hold of some insecticide spray from the local shop for a cheap price. It’s handy to have because trying to catch a mosquito and release it is a real headache! You’re more likely to lose it in the room. Be kind to yourself first by striking and spraying them! It’s you or them, choose you! It’s quite potent stuff so when spraying it try and avoid breathing it in.

4. Cover up in the evening!: I know it’s most likely hot where you’re staying abroad, I get it. Even in the evenings, it was still quite warm in Italy. However, when I was outside in the evening I would wear jeans and a long sleeve shirt. I think this helped reduce my risk of getting bitten as I had less skin on show. Sorry ladies, you missed out on an excellent sight but in return, I was saved from an itchy fate. You have to decide between being hot or bitten, I chose to be hot.

5. Use mosquito repellent spray: Before we came out to Italy we got hold of multiple bottles of mosquito repellent. Every night before going out on the town I’d use it as an aftershave. I’d spray around my neck, my chest, back of my neck, wrists, ankles and anything else that was exposed. I’d also recommend taking it with you in a bag in case you get swarmed by mosquitoes and you need more repellent.

6. Brush at every slight feeling!: If you get the slightest twitch on your skin, or even the smallest sensation brush immediately. You can’t risk it. Every single little sensation could be a mosquito. I brushed at every ‘tingle’ and I caught a mosquito in the act about 3/10 times. The rest were probably itches.

7. Use repellent wipes before bed: Along with sprays they sell special repellent wipes. I would wipe my whole body down, around my pillow and bed headboard. They have a pleasant lemony smell so it’s not bad to have around you. I do this in case there are any mosquitoes left in your room that haven’t been discovered and this should provide you with a bit extra protection.

Well, there you have it! These are the 7 tricks I used to stay bite free for 2 weeks in Italy near the Venetian lagoons (mosquito breeding ground!). I hope this helps you, and happy travelling!
