What are You Saying about Yourself?

Did you know that even the most basic of things you have or do says something about you as a person? Well, they do! Everything is a form of self-expression whether you believe it or not. What you do and what you have can give an insight into your values and what you prioritise. Let’s take a plain cheap t-shirt for example. What could this possibly say about someone? It could mean numerous things. They may not care about fashion, they may prioritise practicality and comfort. They might be financially struggling or they may be relatively rich. Some of the wealthiest people wear cheap plain clothes!

So if there are many different possibilities within just one item, how can you ever make a sensible deduction? The secret is not to just focus on one thing, you can assess people in their entirety by factoring not only possessions but actions. Now I’m not encouraging people to be judgemental of others that really isn’t my point here. I’m raising awareness of the fact that everything is indeed a form of self-expression whether you believe it or not. If you can read into things from what others do/have then you can begin to turn that ‘judgement’ back onto yourself. It’s very important to have total honesty towards what you do. There are feelings behind every decision and you must assess whether they’re your true feelings.

What do you value? Are you putting your true self and happiness first? Or do you act and purchase things for others to see? You must answer these questions. Because if you’re acting or buying for others then there’s an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. Image is important but self-image must come from within and not from external validation. If you give the power to others to validate and give you your self-worth and dictate your image you’re incredibly vulnerable. One day these people may change their mind and they’ll take your self worth with it. Also when you act for others you suppress your true self which can only end up resulting in unhappiness. Even if it’s well buried and not yet realised. It will come to the surface one day.

It’s harder to be your true self than you think. We subconsciously act to please, it’s human nature. You have to really get in tune with who you are, what you value and what you want to represent. The closer you can act and live in accordance with your happiness the better life you’ll have. I’ve noticed this with myself. Looking back historically, any time I’ve acted or even purchased things away from my inner happiness it’s never worked out.

Sometimes we do things and get pleasure out of them purely based on the reactions from others. It’s projecting our happiness and worth away from us and back out into the world searching for validation. Whilst it may feel good to be approved, complimented and liked, if all of it was based on loose foundations you’ll never be truly fulfilled. It just pushes things to the side and provides a short term high and when that environment disappears you’ll only be left with yourself and your own perception of who you are. If you’ve been relying on everyone else to tell you, suddenly you’ll be lost. You are a consistent and reliable factor in your happiness, get in touch with it and your sense of self will never leave you.
